Harcode chicks of GENERAL LUNA

H

Whoever said that "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned," didn't exactly hit the bullseye, as Warner Music Philippines' latest all-female rock group General Luna is out to prove that ladies can, indeed, pump out the jams without the scornful attitude or circumstances.

Introducing General Luna - five individual talents who have come together to give the male-dominated band scene a genuinely good n' hard kick in the butt: vocalist Nicole Asensio, guitarists Caren Mangaran and Audry Dionisio, bassist Alexis Montemayor and drummer Bea Lao are five seriously gifted and drifted individuals who have both the looks and skills that kill.

Though the individuals that make up this musical quintet are no strangers to the local band scene - vocalist Nicole formerly fronting Red Horse Beer Muziklaban finalist Crowjane, guitarist Caren being the lead vocalist and guitarist of power metal group Sanctus and Audry having sessioned with various local rock bands with her involvement in organizations like Fly High Productions and RockEd, bassist Alexis having played for local group Blush and drummer Bea Lao having wowed legends like Wally Gonzales with her impressive background under the tutelage of greats like Mar Dizon and Jun Regalado (not to mention has done a few drum clinics...), it seems almost unfair for their male contemporaries and counterparts that this "female first five" hone their chops together to create a sound that is sure to dominate both the airwaves and the live circuit. No doubt all eyes will be on them, and with the band's characteristic merging of classic rock riffage reminiscent of classic Pinoy Rock acts, and a driving rhythm section that's obviously young in its dynamic complexity, with a beat ala Tool's Danny Carey, yet also in respectful homage to the traditional rock grooves of John Bonham, audiences will hear that they are the real deal. It might be saying a lot, but trust us- these girls deliver more than a punch; it's definitely a rock n' roll wallop!

Among the band’s mentors who helped in crafting the album are topnotch songwriters, producers, and musicians like Ebe Dancel of Sugarfree for “Maria”, Typecast frontman Steve Badiola for the 1st single “Red Heaven”, Typecast guitarist Pakoy Fletchero for “Walang Bintana”, Mayonnaise vocalist and guitarist Monty Macalino for “Nandito”, Rivermaya bassist Japs Sergio for “Dala Ng Ulan” and “Pagmulat”, and NU107’s Francis Brew Reyes and multi-awarded recording engineer Angee Rozul.

Since the band’s infanthood, NU107 was keen on supporting General Luna and the huge potential the rock station sees from the all-female group hence making them NU107’s first ever “Rock Recruits” for the month of April. And if that doesn't already command your attention, then check out the band's newest single "Red Heaven," a perfect primer of what General Luna is all about.

Experience the beauty, the madness, the volume and the voluptous...General Luna is coming your way! Get ready to pick your jaws up off the floor.

*General Luna's upcoming debut album is scheduled to be released under Warner Music Philippines this May 2010.

TANYA MARKOVA

Tanya markova?.. who realy that girl is, why is she so famous?... i reallly wonder who is that girl.. i did a reaaerch and i found out that is a name of a band.. i also find out that there no such name tanya on the members of the band.. that is not even a name.. is just something that the band made... from what i heared that the name TANYA MARKOVA comes from a jumbled word.. ‘Tanya’, an ilocano word ‘natay’ would come up, and it means ‘dead’ in English; and if you rearrange the word ‘Markova’ another ilocano word ‘karovam’ or karubam, which means neighbor, will come up.

The band
Initially the band formed late 2004, Tanya Markova was a brainchild of 2 musically-inclined underachievers who one day decided to just hang out and vent their frustration in life through cigarettes and stupid conversation. Harlon Agsaoay ( aka Norma Love , vocalist, co-songwriter, tambourine) informed Angelo del Pilar (aka Iwa Motors, vocalist, co-songwriter, bell ringer) that he had recently watched a Marilyn Manson documentary and thought he is an attention-seeking genius that’s why he became America’s public enemy when it comes to notoriety, the latter, who is Manson’s number one fan agreed --- and the rest is history. Iwa immediately thought of an idea to combine sappy melodies (Brian Wilsonesque)and scary, caricature-driven lyrics, then they decided to compose songs filled with sarcasm, idiocy, and childish ramblings. During those times the song they’ve created were only meant to be a joke, with nonsensical titles like Yak my Bulate, Mahirap Maging Bopis, and Hoy Bampira ako Takot ka na? (later shortened to Bampira and the first song they’ve ever completed). It took several months before they could find members who would agree to their concept, and almost 2 years to complete the line-up and perform live onstage.

Line-up Completion

After all those lengthy, drunken discussions about aborting the whole idea and debates on adding a rapper to the band (just kidding), the band was finally formed in early 2006. The eager duo was able to convince brothers Jasper Borbajo (aka Heart Abunda, keyboardist), JB Borbajo (aka Sugar K, axeman) and Edu Broce (aka Ruffa Mae Milby, drummer), experienced and well-versed musicians who hail from Bacolod, to become part of the band weeks after they’ve arrived in Manila on December 2005. Florante Sabas (aka Rez Curtis, axeman), JB and Jasper’s cousin, was then tapped as the band’s 2nd guitarist and they’ve enlisted Francis ‘Kiks’ Chavez (aka Skrobak Iskopanjo, bass), as the band’s bassist. They needed a comic relief and a total performer (which, to be honest, would prove essential to the band’s music) so they’ve decided to add Philip Alejandro (aka Mowmow, back-up singer, entertainer) to the line-up. Once formed, they began practicing and it was only on November of 2006 that they landed their first gig which was held in Kolumn Bar, Quezon City. Since then, the band has progressively become a tight unit and has drawn attention whenever they play mainly because of their penchant for wearing costume and make-up, silly antics, and fascination with ghosts and exorcism. Since then, they’ve been playing gigs in bars like Alchemy, Mayric’s, Magnet CafĂ©, and the legendary Club Dredd (which was resurrected in Libis), Al’s Bar, and places all over Metro Manila. They’ve also been included as one of the featured artists in Club Dredd website, and a track called ‘Aninong’ has been included in NU107’s playlist last Christmas (December 2007 to be specific). They were also able to record demos of songs like Bampira and P.A. Roadie Fernandez, and has played alongside respected acts in the music scene.

Regardless of the band’s theatrics and their ability to fuse punk, rock and roll, new wave, and even metal to combine serious musicianship and humor, they have one thing in common --- they were bonded by their love for one type of music --- pop.

Album Recording

With the help of Soupstar’s par excellence Darwin Hernandez and manager R2 Pioquinto, TM was able to record their debut album at Sonic State from July-August 2009 with the help of powerhouse studio engineers Jonathan Ong and Robert Javier.

Tragedy and Hiatus

The band was on their lowest point last September 9, 2009 due to the unexpected passing of Jollybee Borbajo aka Sugar K, (1982-2009) the bands talented axeman and the band’s primary confidence booster. Due to this sudden loss, the band had declared a hiatus in order to deal with the emotional & heartbreaking experience and to think about the band’s direction – but disbanding was the last thing on their mind.

The Rebirth of Jennylyn Sucaldito

December was the month when EJ Guevarra went back to Manila because of one reason --- to play lead guitar for Tanya Markova again. He was actually TM’s original guitarist (Sugar K previously played drums before switching to guitars when Rufa Mae Milby decided to join) and was able to play in a few gigs and became involved on TM’s first few demos but he decided to go back to Bacolod due to personal and work reasons. When Sugar K passed away, he was the only guitarist on our mind that could fill his shoes. EJ Guevarra decided to don the Jennylyn Sucaldito suit again, and he’s on fire.

The MCA Music Signing

Last January 19, 2010 was the date when the band finally felt that they have proven themselves. Being chosen by a premiere and respected major label MCA Music (whose OPM line-up includes top brass artists like Chicosci, Urbandub, Pedicab, The Dawn and Franco among others) should be the band’s highest point to date, owing to the fact that it is going to be a definite start for TM’s musical adventure.
